Environmental Enrichment
Environmental enrichment is intended to facilitate the expression of species (Petaurus breviceps) typical behaviors in captivity and promote psychological well-being. Some form of species appropriate environmental enrichment will be provided to all sugar gliders. Nesting material (ie. Pouches) is provided to all sugar gliders. Typical enrichment products include an exercise wheel, interactive and foraging toys. Additional enrichment may be provided at the discretion of the animal care staff and/or by veterinarian recommendations.
Housing
A minimum of twelve sugar gliders at maintenance level will be housed in pairs and/or trios. Each habitat is a powder coated wire cage manufactured by HQ. Each cage measures 36" tall x 33" wide x 21" deep with 1/2" bar spacing. Cages are located in a climate controlled environment with access to adequate day and night lighting.
Nutrition
Sugar gliders will be provided with constant access to fresh water. Each evening, sugar gliders will be provided with a diet appropriate for the applicable phase of the study. The diet provided will include a source of protein, vegetables, fruit and/or insects, as directed.
